All basement sleeping areas/bedrooms should utilize a safe access method.  As well as a safe exit for residents, Firefighters need a way to get into the house through a basement window.

The window opening must be at least 5 to 7 square feet.  20" wide by 24" high  The opening must be no higher than 44" from the floor. 

The Egress must maintain a minimum height of 36", measured from the top of the well to the bottom of the overhead structure.

It's always a good idea to have an egress window cover for added safety. Egress window covers are required when the opening is within 36" of walkways, deck, porch or driveway.

For your safety, never install a locking device on an egress window cover.

Yes, although most installations do not require structural engineering. Check with you local building developing department for clarification. Some stone buildings, brick or stone veneers, rock foundations may require structural engineering.
